Functional Components of an HER • Integrated view of Patient Data • Data must be able to interface with a variety of systems. For example, laboratory, pharmacy, data entry & results, medical dictionary, & billing.
2. Clinical Decision Support. Support for the physician in formulating his or her assessment of the patient’s condition and making ordering decision at the point of care.
3. Clinician Order Entry Assist clinicians in providing decision support during the order-entry process. For example, allergy alerts, calculating correct dosage etc
4. Access to Knowledge Resources Knowledge resources include (but not limitied to) PubMed, and other library resources.
5.Integrated Communication and Reporting Support. Communication between clinicians, prompt notification of results.
Validation Checks EHR should have validity checks to assist with clinical information
Legal & Social Issues • Legislation of EHR standards. • Federal Laws (CMS policies, Federal register, HIPAA)
