Unit 5: Anatomy and Physiology for • Health and Social Care Assignment 5: Monitoring Healthy Body Systems
Task 1 (P5, P6, M3): • Task 1a: Using annotated diagrams, explain the concept of homeostasis using examples of the homeostatic mechanisms involved in regulating heart rate, breathing rate and body temperature. • Task 1b: Working in pairs, measure the heart rate, breathing rate and temperature before and after a standard period of exercise (The Harvard Step Test) (P6) • Task 1c: Record your data in tables and charts and comment on the validity of your results (M3) • Task 1d: Interpret your data by stating what it tells you about the changes that are taking place inside the body during and in a period straight after the exercise period (P6) • Tips: • Make sure that you use scientific terms accurately and appropriately • If you download images from the internet they must be properly referenced • you need at least 6 references in your booklet – if you are struggling to find 6 it probably means that you have not done enough research and you will struggle to get the merit and distinction grades.
A discussion of the probable homeostatic responses to changes in the environment inside the body brought about by exercise. • Include the need for more oxygen and glucose, and the mechanisms for preventing systems overcompensating (M2) • (approximately 300 words) • An evaluation of the importance of homeostasis in maintaining the healthy functioning of the body. • Discuss the purpose of homeostasis and the consequences of homeostasis going wrong (D2) • (approximately 1000 words)
Tips: • Your report must be formally constructed i.e.: • Introduced (What is the report about? What will you be doing? What conclusion will you come to?) • Concluded (What was your report about? ) • Include paragraph breaks • Write in full sentences; don’t abbreviate words; don’t use ‘slang’ or ‘text’ language. • Avoid the future tense (e.g. this essay will be looking at...). By the time I read it you’ve written it. Stick to the past or the present tense. • Make sure that you spell check and grammar check carefully. • A report may contain headings, tables, charts, diagrams and bulleted lists (label carefully) • X Don’t use words like ‘I’, ‘we’, ‘our’, ‘you’, ‘your’ (e.g. ‘our society’, ‘I think that…’, ‘we all know that…’ etc). • Reference using the Harvard referencing style (if you download pictures from the internet you must reference them) • You should have at least 6 references – if you are struggling you are probably not doing enough research for the merit and distinction grades
