Industry Skills Council recommendations for VET • better identification of the LLN skills of learners before training, and targeted funding to address identified LLN skill gaps • the inclusion of clear advice on LLN skill requirements in Training Packages and/or their companion volumes • the implementation of a strategy to develop greater national awareness of LLN issues, including the de-stigmatisation of LLN skill development • an increased capacity in the VET system, and all practitioners, to support the LLN skill development needs of learners and workers • better-targeted solutions for building the LLN skills of workers/learners.

  6. ISC current projects include… • Mapping of ALL units in ALL training packages • against • The Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) • This means – ALL VET practitioners will need to know about the ACSF

Learning indicators .01 and .02 • .01 awareness of self as learner, approaches and management of learning • Examples: • 1.01 – learner expresses a desire to improve own skills • 5.01 – learner volunteers as a representative on a TAFE course review panel • .02 use of practical strategies to facilitate learning • Examples: • 1.02 – learner sets aside a suitable place for independent study • 5.02 – uses Excel to maintain database and analyse data

Reading indicators .03 and .04 • .03 audience, purpose and meaning • Examples: • 1.03 – finds own name on a class list • 5.03 – reviews industrial award regulations relevant to job role • .04 structure, grammar and vocabulary • Examples: • 1.04 – locates key words in road works signs • 5.04 – highlight key information in complex machine manual, for inclusion in operator manual

Writing indicators .05 and .06 • .05 audience, purpose and meaning • Examples: • 1.05 – writes brief message on greeting card • 5.05 – takes accurate and detailed minutes of a meeting • .06 vocabulary grammar and writing conventions • Examples: • 1.06 – writes common workplace product names and abbreviations • 5.06 – critiques a journal article and presents own balanced and well-structured written viewpoint, synthesizing evidence with correct referencing and in-text citations

Oral communication indicators .07 and .08 • .07 speaking • Examples: • 1.07 – introduces self to class • 5.07 – facilitates group discussion exploring solutions to specific problems with new technology in the workplace • .08 listening • Examples: • 1.08 – understands oral request to take an early lunch break • 5.08 – critiques interview of public figure, identifying bias, viewpoint and effectiveness of presentation

Numeracy indicators .09, .10 and .11 • .09 identification of maths information and meaning • Examples: • 1.09 – locates total amount to pay on a restaurant bill • 5.09 – facilitates group discussion exploring solutions to specific problems with new technology in the workplace • .10 problem-solving and maths processes • Examples: • 1.10 – gives simple oral directions to own address • 5.10 – investigates personal loan options and decides on best deal • .11 maths language, symbols and diagrams for communication • Examples: • 1.11 – writes own date of birth using accepted conventions, e.g. 5/11/96 • 5.11 – analyses graphically and discusses data drawn from research on impact of environmental issue such as green house emissions
