Fungi • Characteristics • Eukaryotic • Most are multicellular – except yeasts • Nonmotile • Heterotrophic – acquire nutrients by absorption • Release digestive enzymes that digest plant cell walls and then grow into them • Mode of nutrition specializes fungi as: Saprophytes, parasites or mutualistic
Fungi • Classified according to their spore producing structure • Typical Fungi • Hyphae – individual filaments • Mycelium – masses or network of hyphae • Hyphae have cell walls made of chitin • Rhizoid – root like hyphae • Stolons – Hyphae that run along the surface of the food
Types of Fungi • PHYLUM ZYGOMYCOTA • Zygomycetes • Terrestrial molds • Reproduce using sporangiophores that are capped by a sporangia containing spores. • Ex: Rhizopus stolonifer common bread mold
Types of Fungi • PHYLUM BASIDIOMYCOTA • Club fungi • Reproduce using club-shaped structure called basidia that form basidiospores. • Ex: mushrooms, shelf fungi
Types of Fungi • PHYLUM ASCOMYCOTA • Sac fungi • Reproduce by producing spores in an ascus- “little sac” • Ex: truffles, morels, yeast, dutch elm disease
Types of Fungi • PHYLUM DEUTEROMYCOTA • Imperfect fungi • Do not know how they reproduce • Ex: penicillin, ringworm
