The real… Thomas Paine • He was born in Thetford, England. • His first wife died within a year of their marriage, and he was legally separated from his second. • He tried to do several different jobs during his early life but was a failure at all of them. • He met Benjamin Franklin in London in 1774, who helped him immigrate to America. • He settled in Philadelphia and became a journalist. • In 1776, he wrote a short pamphlet called Common Sense.
Common Sense • Strongly favored American independence against the British • First work that actually openly asked for independence from the British • Argued for the establishment of a republican constitution
The Crisis • Collection of Articles written from 1776-1783 • Also known as American Crisis • Supports the American Revolution and rallies for American independence
Later Life • Moved to England and France after Revolutionary War was over • Wrote pamphlet in Europe titled Rights of Man • He was abandoned by his friends and the public because of his extreme views.
