  5. TYPES OF ROTARY KILNS A direct-fired kiln: utilizes direct contact between the material and process gas to efficiently process the material. It heats material by bypassing the combustion gases through the rotary kiln. The combustion gas is either co-currently or counter-currently forced into the drum. 1 2 An indirect-fired kiln: is enclosed in a furnace, which is then externally heated.
