The Incurably Ill • Wartime, Adolf Hitler suggested, "was the best time for the elimination of the incurably ill." • About 200,000 handicapped people were murdered between 1940 and 1945. Harthem Castle, euthanasia killing center where people with physical and mental disabilities were killed by gassing and lethal injection.^
The Homosexuals • May 6, 1933 Nazis ransacked the “Institute for Sexual Science” in Berlin, Germany. • In 1934, a special Gestapo (Secret State Police) division on homosexuals was set up. • The number of prosecuted homosexuals increased sharply, peaking in the years (1937-1939). • An estimated 1.2 men where homosexuals in Germany in 1928.
The Gypsies • Among the groups the Nazi regime and its Axis partners singled out for persecution on so-called racial grounds were the Roma (Gypsies). • In May 1940, the SS and police deported approximately 2,500 Roma and Santi, primarily residents of Hamburg and Bremen, to Lublin District in the General government. • Only in late 1979 did the West German Federal Parliament identify the Nazi persecution of Roma as being racially motivated
The Polish • German police units shot thousands of Polish civilians and required all Polish males to work against their will. • The Nazis main goal was to destroy Polish culture by eliminating the Polish political, religious, and intellectual leadership. • This was done in part because of German contempt for Polish culture and in part to prevent resistance against the occupation.
The Twins • Twins as young as five years of age were usually murdered after the experiment was over and their bodies dissected. • After the twins had been taken from their parents, they were taken to the showers. Since they were "Mengele's children," they were treated differently than other prisoners. • Besides the obvious, suffering through medical experiments, the twins were often allowed to keep their hair and allowed to keep their own clothes. • They were then taken to the twin's barracks where they were required to fill out a form. The form asked for a brief history and basic measurements such as age and height.
