What does “Holy Book” mean? • God’s revelations to His messengers. • Have been brought to the messengers by angel Gabriel. • Has not undergone any changes.
How many Holy Books are there? • God sent down to his messenger four main books: • Torah Moses • Zaboor David • Gospel Jesus • Qur’an Muhammad
How did we acquire this knowledge of the Holy Books? • The basic and most important source of knowledge about the Holy Books is the: QUR’AN
The torah and injeel (gospel) • The Torah was revealed to Moossa (peace be upon him). Allah says: "We gave Mossaa the book and made it a guidance for the children of Israel" [Qur'an 17:2] • The Injeel (Gospel) was revealed to Esaa (Jesus, peace be upon him). Allah says: "We also gave him (Esaa) the Injeel that contained guidance and light. It confirmed the Torah that came before it, and contained guidance and advice for the pious.“ [Qur'an 5:46]
The Books that we know • The Scripture of Ibrahim were in the form of sheets. They do not exist now but as mentioned in the Qur'an they had been revealed to Ibrahim. Allah says: "This surely is also mentioned in the early sheets, the sheets of Ibrahim and Moossa." [Qur'an 87:18-19] • The Zaboor (Psalms) was revealed to Daawood. Allah says: "We also gave Daawood the Zaboor." [Qur'an 4:163]
Did every Messenger of God have a book? • Only four messengers have books. • Four other messengers have scriptures: • Adam 10 pages • Seth 50 pages • Idris 30 pages • Abraham 10 pages • Total: 100 pages
Is every revelation a book? • Every Prophet receives revelation, but not all revelations are books. • Allah tells us that He sent revelations to each one of His Prophets. He says: "We have surely revealed to you like We revealed to Nooh and the Prophets after him. We also revealed to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, the sons of Yaqub, Esaa (Jesus), Ayoob, Yoonus, Haroon, Sulayman. We also gave to Dawud a Zaboor." [Qur'an 4:163]
What is the importance of Holy Books? • Sources of the Messengers’ messages • They are messages from God (Letters from God to His servants) • Guides for mankind in this life to the right path • Guides for gaining the pleasure of God and Paradise
Why should we believe in the Holy Books? • An important pillar of our faith is to believe in the books that Allah sent down to His Messengers. • The Messengers used the books to teach the people and guide them to the right path. • Allah commands us to believe in His books. Allah says: “O you who believe, believe in Allah, His messenger, the Book that He revealed to His Messenger, and the books that He revealed before.” [Qur’an 4:136]
What do they tell us? • Allah's revelations contain things that which Allah wants us to know or do, they show us what is right and wrong in order to be happy in this life and the next life. • In general, the books of Allah tell us about: • Our Lord, His Oneness, names and qualities • Unseen: What happened before (eg. stories of the previous nations) and what will happen next (eg. Day of Judgment, hell and paradise) • Legislation: How to worship our Lord and rules that we are to abide by in our life.
What happens when we don’t believe in the Holy Books? • We, Muslims, have to believe and completely follow our book, the Qur'an, similarly the people of the previous Prophets had to completely follow their books. If they did they would be rewarded, if they did not, they would be punished. • Allah says: "If only they had followed the Torah, the Injeel and what has now been revealed to them (the Qur'an) from their Lord, they surely would have gotten food from above them and beneath their feet. Among them is a moderate community, but many of them do evil deeds." [Qur'an 5:66]
What happens when we don’t believe in the Holy Books?, cont’d. • Muslims have to believe in all the Holy Books sent by God to His Messengers. • “O you who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the scripture which He has sent to His Messenger and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denies Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Day of Judgment, has gone far, far astray.” [Qur’an 4:136]
The qur’an • The Qur'an is the last book from Allah that was revealed to His Messenger, Muhammad (peace b upon him). Allah says: "Alif, Laam, Meem. This is a book in which there is no doubt, in it is guidance for the pious." [Qur'an 2:1 -2] • It was taken down by the angel Jibreel to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gradually over 23 years whenever needed. Allah says: "It is the Qur'an which we have separated in time that you might recite it to the people over long period. And we have sent it gradually." [Qur'an 17:106]
