Equipment Standards • TSO-C145a: SBAS Sensors (for use with FMS) • TSO-C146a: SBAS Panel-Mount Navigation equipment • Both reference RTCA/DO-229C, with a few exceptions • Both supercede TSO-C129() • Class 1= no LPV; Class 3=LPV • EASA TSO-C145 and C-146 • RTCA updating to DO-229D (Summer 06) • Will include many clarifications • Also includes correction to satellite selection
Installation Guidance • AC 20-138A (GNSS Installation) • Issued 22 Dec 2003 • Addresses SBAS (and GBAS) installation • Mask Angles • Group Delay of Total System • Evaluation of precision approach and APV capabilities
Approval Challenges • Volume of projects expected to be significant • ~70,000 Existing GPS Users with equipment that will have an upgrade path to SBAS: Will be modification, not new installation • Expect many more new installations • Not possible to conduct each project as supplemental type certificate
Example Equipment & Approval • Garmin GNS-480 • SBAS, including LPV • Built-in VOR and VHF Comm • Only existing Class 3 (LPV-capable) equipment • Approved Model List • FAA has approved not just one installation, but installations in ~135 aircraft types in accordance with installation instructions
Field Approvals • AC 20-138A expanded use of field approvals to install GNSS equipment • Can be accomplished as a minor modification under certain circumstances • Installed in accordance with manufacturer instructions • Interface with all other equipment covered in manufacturer instructions of both sets of equipment • Expect this provision to be used for upgrades to existing equipment
