Introduction • Field study on the new building of the Flemisch Institute for Biotechnology (VIB)
West Wing East Wing Patio Main Building N Building Lay Out & data • 3 floors – 36 m wide • 300 people • 13000 m² - 8000 m² laboratories • HVAC system : • summer 18°C/>30% • winter 21.5°C/>30% • Heating : condensing boilers (gas) • Cooling : two screw compressor machines • Humidification : vapor injection, gas fired boiler
Free cooling – Design errors • Plate heat exchanger : • design 1307 kW • operation 200 kW • Effectiveness : 0.37 • Ice water temperature : design 4 °C • operation 1°C • Use of large cooling tower : high fan and pumping power
Conclusion • Measurement campaign on high technology laboratory building • Part load – Full load • Free cooling system, low performance • Changes in the design could give bether performance • Future : follow up of changes
