PDS 2010 Tutorial Ideas • Purpose • Serve the PDS science community: users and providers • Respond to need voiced by user community • Introduce and promote (raise visibility of, show return on investment of) PDS 2010preview • Target audience • Scientists who use planetary data • Post-docs, graduate students • Content: • Introduction to PDS 2010 • Emphasize access for users • Compare existing PDS to PDS 2010 to help with transition for users
Discipline Specific • Target science objectives, e.g. comets and asteroids • Involve multiple nodes, e.g. SBN, PPI, Rings and Atmospheres • Implication: Tutorial development will require collaboration from Nodes • Recommendation: Pick one science objective that interests the Nodes as prototype
Delivery Strategy at DPS 90-minute session at DPS Online component Some synchronous sessions (using online collaborative tool e.g. Elluminate) During these sessions, presenter and participants walk through PDS options and tools together Synchronous sessions also good for answering questions Will require some assistance from Nodes Some asynchronous material (self-paced tutorials) MGMT Node will produce these materials with guidance from Nodes • Brief introduction to PDS 2010 • If willing, Node reps can present 20-minute overview of Node, if not – MGMT Node will provide speakers • This face-to-face session will also be an opportunity to gather questions that potential participants would like to have answered in the follow-up sessions • Pick a different science target each year (and thus, involve different Nodes each year)
Summary • Implication: significant upfront effort required to develop materials • Management Node to develop materials with help from Nodes • Payoff: • Material can be reused (increases return on investment) • More satisfied customers • Because we’ve responded to need voiced by user community • Increased buy-in of new PDS 2010 system
