  2. Outline Introduction Ship types and regulations Refrigerants and refrigerant charges Banks and emissions M o n t r e a l P r o t o c o l O E W G - 3 2 m e e t i n g, 2 3 - 2 7 J u l y 2 0 1 2, B a n g k o k 2

  3. Introduction Decision XXIII/11 requests a summary of available data concerning the use of ODS on ships, the estimated refrigerant bank and an estimation of emissions Information from the 2010 RTOC Assessment Report has been updated M o n t r e a l P r o t o c o l O E W G - 3 2 m e e t i n g, 2 3 - 2 7 J u l y 2 0 1 2, B a n g k o k 3

  4. Ship types and regulations All ships larger than 100 GT (gross tonnes) have refrigeration systems that are monitored, ships above 500 GT are covered by classification Review January 2011: 103,392 seagoing ships > 100 GT Numerous types of ships (one coding system: 318) Air pollutants emissions covered by MARPOL 73/78 issued by IMO (International Maritime Organisation) 1 July 2010: MARPOL Annex VI requires ships > 100 GT to maintain list of equipment and ODS records M o n t r e a l P r o t o c o l O E W G - 3 2 m e e t i n g, 2 3 - 2 7 J u l y 2 0 1 2, B a n g k o k 4

  5. Refrigerants and charges HCFC-22 historically the preferred refrigerant Limited amounts of CFCs still in use Retrofit fluids used: R-407C, R-417A, R-421A, R-422D HFC-134a and R-410A (AC) in new systems, R-717 has started to be used Refrigerant charge for ships > 100 GT: Direct systems: 100-500 kg Indirect systems (HC/R-717): 10-100 kg Annual leakage can be as high as 20-40%; can be reduced by the use of monitoring equipment, regular inspections M o n t r e a l P r o t o c o l O E W G - 3 2 m e e t i n g, 2 3 - 2 7 J u l y 2 0 1 2, B a n g k o k 5
