A Thesis Presented to the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science Juan Miguel L. Andres, MarikaGianina H. Fernandez Advised by Dr. Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo EMOTIV EPOC™ IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A SMART ROOM
Introduction • Paraplegia • Disability: result of spinal cord injuries • Without control of lower limbs • Paraplegic individuals are usually dependent on either crutches or wheelchairs to maneuver around a room • Assistive Technology • Aims to offer these individuals greater convenience in performing otherwise impossible tasks • Emotiv EPOC™ • Gaming peripheral that detects brainwaves
Main Goal • Be able to aid paraplegic individuals in maneuvering around a room via the Emotiv EPOC™ • How? • By allowing them to control different electronics through the Emotiv EPOC™, thus minimizing the need for movement.
Research Questions • Research Questions: • What types of cognitive thought would be appropriate for mapping to enable maximum efficiency and ease-of-use? • What are the easiest cognitive and emotive thoughts to train for a normal user? • How do we map each cognitive thought and emotive thought to each control for the air-conditioner and television set? • How do we translate the decoded Emotiv Signals into IR signals in order to control the appliances? • Is it possible for to create an interface which could work with different brands of air-conditioners and television types? • Is it possible to use affective states to control an appliance as well?
Scope and Limitations/ Significance • Scope and Limitations: • Paraplegic individuals • Not mentally impaired • Significance: • Beneficial to paraplegic individuals • Emotiv is significantly more cost-efficient than other brain-computer interfaces • Aid in maneuvering around a room • Springboard for newer, better innovations and further studies

Explanation of Components Neuroheadset Detects Cognitiv, Affectiv, Expressiv Bluetooth USB Receives headset signals PC (program) Processes data received from headset IR USB Dongle Accepts the protocols from program Sends signals Television Set Air-conditioner
Methodology I : System Development • Phase 1: Systems Development • Developing the User Interface • Visual C++, Qt add-in for the GUI’s • Mapping Signals to the UI’s • Hardware Integration • Emotiv Headset • USB Receiver • PC • IR Dongle • Appliances
A Virtual Reality Graphical User Interface Looks like a room Simulates Emotiv commands
Methodology II: Testing • Phase 2: Testing Phase • User Profile • 18-25 years old • Computer literate • With/without prior knowledge of Emotiv • Understands English • Normal motor capabalities
Methodology 3 • Phase 2: Testing Phase • Methodology • Screening • Orientation • Gathering of background information • Testing and data collection • Post-testing • Debriefing • Reporting of Results
Initial Results: Systems Development • Application Functionalities for the television set: • Turning the television on • Turning the television off • Browsing one channel up • Browsing one channel down • Increasing volume • Decreasing volume
Initial Results: Systems Development • Application Functionalities for the air-conditioning unit: • Turning the unit on • Turning the unit off • Increasing the temperature • Decreasing the temperature • Increasing fan speed • Decreasing fan speed
Data Logger • Tracks specific actions done • Push, pull, lift, drop, rotate right, rotate left • Lists time intervals in which these actions occurred. • Stopped manually (when a key is pressed) • Creates a .txt file which presents data in a tabular manner
Continuing Development • Preliminary Testing using the Emotiv EPOCTM simulator • Integrating the IR dongle into the system • Final testing phase
