Introduction • Paraplegia • Disability: result of spinal cord injuries • Without control of lower limbs • Paraplegic individuals are usually dependent on either crutches or wheelchairs to maneuver around a room • Assistive Technology • Aims to offer these individuals greater convenience in performing otherwise impossible tasks • Emotiv EPOC™ • Gaming peripheral that detects brainwaves

  3. Main Goal • Be able to aid paraplegic individuals in maneuvering around a room via the Emotiv EPOC™ • How? • By allowing them to control different electronics through the Emotiv EPOC™, thus minimizing the need for movement.

Research Questions • Research Questions: • What types of cognitive thought would be appropriate for mapping to enable maximum efficiency and ease-of-use? • What are the easiest cognitive and emotive thoughts to train for a normal user? • How do we map each cognitive thought and emotive thought to each control for the air-conditioner and television set? • How do we translate the decoded Emotiv Signals into IR signals in order to control the appliances? • Is it possible for to create an interface which could work with different brands of air-conditioners and television types? • Is it possible to use affective states to control an appliance as well?

Scope and Limitations/ Significance • Scope and Limitations: • Paraplegic individuals • Not mentally impaired • Significance: • Beneficial to paraplegic individuals • Emotiv is significantly more cost-efficient than other brain-computer interfaces • Aid in maneuvering around a room • Springboard for newer, better innovations and further studies

  19. Data Logger • Tracks specific actions done • Push, pull, lift, drop, rotate right, rotate left • Lists time intervals in which these actions occurred. • Stopped manually (when a key is pressed) • Creates a .txt file which presents data in a tabular manner
