What is the present participle? The present participle ends in –ing. When the present participle is used as a part of the verb, it shows continuing action, and it always follows a helping verb (a present form of be). It is sometimes called the present progressive. Find that present participle! • Dudley is doodling pictures of doodlebugs. • Graham is swimming in the river. • Hank and Tupper are drinking ketchup for dinner. • Wellington is singing a song about ping-pong.
Use a present participle For each sentence, change the verb from present tense to a present participle. • Hank’s bloated goldfish sinks to the bottom of the tank. • Otis dreams about croaking toads. • The flowers spring out of the ground. • Nate wears deodorant on dates. • Eighth graders love English class.
