COSEE Great Lakes Objectives • Facilitate collaboration between scientists and educators • Enhance teacher capabilities in science • Assist scientists in education and public outreach • Integrate Great Lakes and ocean sciences in curricula Shipboard Science on Lake ErieSmooth Sailing for Great Lakes Education Who? 16 teachers from Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania, 6 Scientists and 4 Sea Grant Educators What? A week-long course aboard the 180-foot long U.S. EPA Great Lakes National Program Office research vessel, the R/V Lake Guardian Where? Erie, PA; Detroit, MI; and Cleveland, Toledo, Port Huron, and Put-In-Bay, Ohio Educators worked alongside researchers decked out in hard hats, work vests and steel-toed boots and collected information about water quality, physical conditions of the lake, and living things in and below the water. When the samples came onboard, the work gear was traded for lab coats as the educators learned how to interpret the data and identify lake plankton and benthic invertebrates. Their data will contribute to the EPA’s log of the changing Lake Erie system, but more importantly will become part of curricula in grades 4-10 and informal education in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. • Exciting Outcomes: • Positive evaluations from teachers and researchers • Teachers learned new information, skills and teaching techniques • Commitments to infuse Great Lakes information into the curricula • An Example of Success…. • The Great Lakes Science Center’s informal educator has developed workshops and field trips related to Lake Erie. Students who visit the GLSC will collect water samples, check turbidity and temperature and then share their data with scientists! Future Schedule for Shipboard Science Courses: 2008 - Lake Ontario 2009 - Lake Michigan and Lake Huron 2010 - Lake Superior For more information visit our website http://coseegreatlakes.net Dr. Rosanne Fortner, Director COSEE GL fortner.2@osu.edu Helen Domske, New York Sea Grant hmd4@cornell.edu
