The Cell • This unit will cover all the major living things on Earth • animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms
The Cell • WHAT IS COMMON TO ALL THESE GROUPS? .
The Cell • WHAT IS COMMON TO ALL THESE GROUPS? • body process • basic materials involved in metabolism (oxygen, food, H2O etc)
The Cell History • Histology: is the study of special forms of cells and their association and organs.
The Cell History • Histology is closely associated with Cytology • Cytology: The study of cell structure.
The Cell History • The specialized compartments of a cell, the organelles, are so small that it was impossible to study their structure until the electron microscope was developed in 1938.
How is it that we can see cell organelles? • The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1974 was awarded jointly to Albert Claude, Christian de Duve and George E. Palade • They were awarded for their discoveries regarding the functional and structural organization of the cell organelles.
How many cells in your body? • See pictures of scientists Claude, De Duve & Palade
How many cells in your body? • 10 trillion cells divided into about 200 different types! • Our muscles are made of muscle cells • Our livers of liver cells • There are even very specialized types of cells that make the enamel for our teeth or the clear lenses in our eyes!
