  5. The Cell History • Histology: is the study of special forms of cells and their association and organs.

  6. The Cell History • Histology is closely associated with Cytology • Cytology: The study of cell structure.

  7. The Cell History • The specialized compartments of a cell, the organelles, are so small that it was impossible to study their structure until the electron microscope was developed in 1938.

  8. How is it that we can see cell organelles? • The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1974 was awarded jointly to Albert Claude, Christian de Duve and George E. Palade • They were awarded for their discoveries regarding the functional and structural organization of the cell organelles.
