  4. ROOSEVELT’S GOALS • #1 – BUILD PUBLIC CONFIDENCE • Fireside Chats • Eleanor visited campsites of the 2nd Bonus March • Promised a “New Deal”

  5. #2 – STABILIZE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS • Bank “holidays” • Government inspection of banks • FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.) • SEC (Securities Exchange Commission)

  6. #3 – PROVIDE RELIEF & JOBS • Started public works programs • Federal Emergency Relief Agency • CCC – FDR’s favorite program • Works Progress Administration

  7. #4 – REGULATING THE ECONOMY • NATIONAL RECOVERY ACT • Provided federal codes & regulations for wages, production, working conditions, etc. • Public Works Administration built Grand Coulee Dam, bridges in NYC and Florida

  8. ASSISTING: FARMERS • AGRICULTURAL ADJUSTMENT ACT (AAA) • Provided subsidies to farmers who cut production

  9. ASSISTING: HOMEOWNERS • LOW INTEREST LOANS • Helped homeowners purchase/keep homes

  10. THE SECOND NEW DEAL • Expanded government programs even more • Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) • Public Works Administration • Social Security System

CRITICISMS OF THE NEW DEAL • Women & African Americans paid less than men • New Deal programs didn’t go far enough • Some thought the programs were socialistic • Government was taking too much responsibility • Modern day critics say the New Deal prevented economic recovery through high taxes • Criticized the deficit spending of the New Deal

LAST DAYS OF THE NEW DEAL • New Deal Protections helped labor unions grow • New Deal projects provided jobs for unemployed artists, musicians, writers • New Deal lessened suffering during the Depression • New Deal changed the way Americans thought about the role of the government and President
