The Old Fire of 2003 • High Intensity Fire • Burned over 91,000 Acres • Location: South side of Highway 18
The Old Fire, started near Waterman Canyon Road and destroyed hundreds of homes. The Old Fire progressed rapidly forcing the evacuation of thousands
SkyPark’s Forest Management Objectives • Purpose was to increase Forest’s defense against fire. • Maintain healthy forest • Recreational • Prevent high intensity fires • Planted about 435 seedlings per plot
Reforestation Process • Regenerating of trees for planting purposes • Manage the cleaning process of the burned forest • Prepare the site • Begin to plant • Stock Surveys
Forest Inventory Methodology • Plot Surveys -Entire Areas need to be surveyed -1/10 Acre Circular Plot • Radius of 37.2 Feet • Used lodging tape to measure area
Analysis • 23 plots • 435 seedlings per acre • 31% mortality rate of artificial seedlings
