ACME Confection Application System Engineered By: Pumping Solutions, Inc. Sales Rep: Steve Shapiro. Explore the opportunity to manufacture large batches of gelatin-like candy with multiple colors and flavors using new extruding technology. The solution involves designing a multiple Sigma HK pump skid integrated with Emerson mass flow meters and Prominent D2C controllers to control the flow and speed of flavors/colors based on production speed. This system offers additional benefits such as reducing changeover time from 3-6 hours to 6-10 minutes.

ACME Confection Application System Engineered By: Pumping Solutions, Inc Sales Rep: Steve Shapiro
Synopsis • Current Application • Manufacturing large batches of gelatin-like candy • Single color • Single flavor • New Application • Manufacture large batches of gelatin-like candy • Multi color (5 colors) • Multi flavor (5 flavors)
Opportunity / Problem Opportunity: Manufacture large batches of multi-colored and flavored gelatin like candy with new extruding technology. Problem: Color and flavor must be injected at the point of extrusion to make a multi-strand “ribbon” of candy where each strand is a different color and flavor. At the point of extrusion, pressures are ~1200 – 1400psi and the flavor & color are to be metered proportionally to the dough which is varying by the speed of production run.
Solution = Prominent • Solution: Design a multiple Sigma HK pump skid that is integrated with Emerson mass flow meters and Prominent D2C controllers. • The D2C controllers will take the 4-20ma signal from the Emerson mass flow meters and create a PID loop to control the speed and flow of the flavors / colors based on production speed.
Additional System Benefits • The new system allowed the candy manufacturer to make a “base” dough and they could change color / flavor combinations on the fly, where they used to have to run until the batch was gone, stop, clean the equipment, make a new batch, and then begin production again. • Old changeover time was 3-6 hours • New changeover time is NOW 6-10 minutes
