Edict of Nantes • Who was involved & when it happened – • 1598 in France • What happened & where it happened – • Henry Bourbon ascended to throne and converted to Catholic, but 15 years later issued this edict to create peace in France • It gave full rights to Huguenots (Protestants) in France • Significance of it - • Created a peace and prosperity • Henry IV (Bourbon) remained popular 5
Building of Palace of Versailles • Who was involved & when it happened – • 1682 outside Paris • What happened & where it happened – • Louis XIV built greatest palace in Europe • Louis had been overthrown in childhood • Goal was to tame nobility • Made it a privilege to live at Versailles • Significance of it - • Nobility no longer threatened Louis – wanted to serve him
War of Spanish Succession • Who was involved & when it happened – • 1700-1715 – war involving all European powers • They wanted to prevent France from getting all power in Spain by letting Louis’s Grandson take throne of Spain • What happened & where it happened – • Spanish king died without an heir • Next in line was grandson of Louis XIV • A coalition formed to prevent that • Significance of it - • France lost supremacy – weakened by war 7
