Note to teachers • 1: This lesson assumes students have a full awareness of the political, economic and social institutions of the Middle Ages. • 2: It is geared to the upper levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy and requires in-depth interpretation and analysis. • 3: The illustrations, in many cases, require teacher explanation and discussion • 4: Teachers should pick and choose items they find important in teaching this lesson

  3. LESSON AIM • WHAT EVIDENCE DO HISTORIANS HAVE REGARDING THE NATURE OF CHANGE DURING THE RENAISSANCE ?

  5. DEFINE THE ISSUE • The painting below was an example of “Renaissance” painting. It is a distinct change from Medieval art. “Renaissance” describes the period in history from about 1400-1650. In your groups and based on your knowledge of the previous period, decide how this picture demonstrates CHANGE from the Middle Age art and ideas. “The Birth of Venus”

  6. TAKE A GUESS • Write out your description of the period known as the Renaissance based upon your group’s interpretation of “The Birth of Venus”. Begin your description with: • THE RENAISSANCE WAS A PERIOD THAT________________________

  7. DEFINITION OF “RENAISSANCE” • “The Renaissance was a period of change that involved a rebirth of ancient Greek and Roman culture. It was also a rebirth of “HUMANISM” in which man focused more on enjoying life on earth rather than the hereafter. The European “emerged” from a period of reorganization and intellectual slumber.” • WHICH GROUP WAS CLOSEST?

  8. BY THE END OF THE LESSON • Let us, by the end of the lesson understand exactly what was “REBORN” and what “CHANGES” took place.

  9. BACKGROUND • By the 16th century, Europe experienced major changes in political, economic and social conditions. • These changes were evident in monumental works of art and in new economic and political theories.
