DOCTORAL STUDIES IN TS:BACKGROUND • ACTIVITIES OVER A DECADE (Round tables in 2003 and 2005, working group (2007), survey in 2008, one day EST symposium in 2006 and 2008, e-forum in 2008, conference in 2008, panels in EST Congress in 2004 and 2010. • DOCTORAL SUMMER SCHOOLS (e.g. CETRA, TRSS, EMUNI, etc.) • POST-GRADUATE CONFERENCES
European ITN project TIME 2011-2014 • An example of industry-relevant doctoral training • General and specific objectives • Four research areas • Secondments • Transferable skills; workshops
European ITN project TIME 2011-2014 URL: eu-researchprojects.eu/time
European ITN project TIME 2011-2014 • TIME = “Translation Research Training: an Integrated and Intersectoral Model for Europe” • ITN or Initial Training Network funded in the FP7 Marie Curie Framework • 48 months: 1/1/2011 to 31/12/2014: • P1-P6, T1-T36 , F1-F6 • T14
General Objectives • Train the ESR and ER to become experts in translation and multilingual/multimedia communication; • Create a network for a new generation of doctoral graduates; • Increase cooperation between private/public institutions; • Establish the foundations for academic/private sector joint PhD training and a joint doctoral degree.
TIME AssociatedPartners TIME: AssociatedPartners
TIME: Training in broadercomplementary skills • E.g.: IT skills, writing web content, conflict management… • How? • workshops: one day of training in complementary skills; • courses supplied by the doctoral schools (or other initiatives) of the individual host institutions; • secondments to the associated partners in the private and public sectors.
Panel in Leuven, 20.8.2013 • Name of the degree, of the program • One label TS or a more flexible format? • How to get students from other disciplines? • How to open up the training (components; partners)? • Are we too much defensive/subservient to the status quo/university authorities? • How to be more pro-active, e.g. from a Summer school to a full program, starting a network, going beyond PhD?
Panel in Leuven, 20.8.2013 • Full doctoral programme in TS ORpluridisciplinary doctoral programme in Humanities and Social sciences (with only a part in TS)? • Specific part in TS: *How to specialize (e.g in conference interpreting, AVT, localisation)? • European and/or national network of TS Doc programmes? (critical mass, synergy, co-operation / fragmentation, EU funding programmes, etc.)
Whydoweneed to improveourdoctoraltraining? • To get highly qualified teachers in translation and researchers in TS • To face up to the non-recognition or even the regression of TS in certain universities • To allow the reproduction and the development of our own field • To give more visibility to translation and TS • To improve our tools and methods in order to better understand international, multilingual and multimodal communications • To have a coherent and fruitful dialogue with other disciplines.
An International Doctorate in TS (IDTS)? • The IDTS would be a support structure for an active network of cooperation between existing programs. • The IDTS would be inclusive(independently of the name of the program), with a membership of x (5?) years and a certain fee.
Aims of the IDTS Network • A support structure for cooperation • An online bank of online course materials • A list of supervisors or co-supervisors • Location of training partners in industry • Training for research supervisors • Reference framework for joint doctorates • Contacts for the mobility of students • Attract external funding • Minimal objectives and skills.
A label of quality? • Since most quality metrics are country-specific or onerous to process, the EST cannot measure quality itself. • The qualityof programs could be measured in terms of indexed publications by successful doctoral students. • For example, over a x (five?)-year period, an average of two thesis-related indexed-journal publications accepted per successful doctoral student. Acceptance may be prior to the defense of the thesis or within three years of the defense of the thesis. • This could be calculated as an average for the entire program.
Board of management? • A five-member board, comprising Director, Treasurer, and three further members. • The Board would report annually to the Executive Board of the EST. • The funds generated by the IDTS should be used for the running and further development of the network.
Implementationstrategy? • Initial funding for the IDTS network would be provided by the EST • December 2014 (or August 2014?):Constitutive meeting of interested stakeholders. • The aim of the meeting would be to determine foundational members and to elect a proposed Board for the IDTS.
