Agenda Notes on Deceitful and Honest Communication Reading/Annotation
FYI The next exam will be Tuesday It will be short (35-40 min), but still count as a test grade We will review Monday
Communication Interactions between the animals producing the signal and those receiving the signal are very complex Information is shared in any communication, but it does not have to be accurate information
Interspecific vs. Intraspecific communication Interspecific communication = communication between individuals of different species Intraspecific communication = communication between members of the same species The breakdown between honest and deceitful communication is partially related to whether we are discussing interspecific communication or intraspecificcommunication
Why be honest in interspecific communication? Individuals can provide inaccurate or misleading information (lie) to increase their fitness Honesty will prevail in interspecific communication if both parties benefit (ex. Gazelle and cheetah)
Examples of deceitful interspecies communication Anglerfish lure Predatory photuris fireflies mimicry
Why lie in Intraspecific Communication? Deceit Increases the fitness of the individual liar at the expense of the other members of the species It often takes less resources to achieve a goal if you communicate dishonestly than it would to do it the old fashion way
Examples of intraspecific liar Mantis shrimp Bluegill sunfish
Why trust any communication then? Scientist have discovered that lying only works when it is relatively rare. In species where there was too much lying, other members of the species have evolved not to trust each other, thus there is no opportunity to lie. Animals “trust” signals because more often than not it pays to respond to signals normally
