5 Types of Chemical Reactions 2-15-11 Matching Cards Graphic Organizer Worksheet
5 types of chemical equations • Why do we categorize? • To break large groups down into smaller groups to make them easier to understand • To make differences and similarities more clear
Type 1: SYNTHESIS • Definition: Two or more reactants combine to form one product • Key sign: One product • General Structure: A + B C • Examples: • #4: CO + O2 CO3 • #2: SO2 + O2 SO4
Type 2: DECOMPOSITION • Definition: One reactant breaks down into two or more products • Key sign: One reactant • General Structure: A B + C • Examples: • #5: H2CO3 CO2 + H2O • #10: NCl3 N2 + Cl2
Type 3: SINGLE REPLACEMENT • Definition: A single element replaces another element in a compound • Key sign: One single element and a compound on both sides of the equation • General Structure: AB + C AC + B • Examples: • #13: H2SO4 + Ca CaSO4 + H2 • #14: Li + H2O LiOH + H2
Type 4: DOUBLE REPLACEMENT • Definition: Two ions replace each other to form two different compounds • Key sign: Two compounds on both sides of the equation • General Structure: AB + CD AD + CB • Examples: • #3: CaCl2 + K3PO4 Ca3(PO4)2 + KCl • #17: Al(SO4)3 + Ca(OH)2 Al(OH)3 + CaSO4
Type 5: COMBUSTION • Definition: A chemical burns in oxygen to product light/heat • Key sign: Oxygen is a reactant, carbon dioxide and water are products (or vice versa) • General Structure: A + O2 CO2 + H2O • Examples: • #16: C10H22 + O2 CO2 + H2O • #19: CH4 + O2 CO2 + H2O
Categories (15 min) • Organize the 19 chemical equations into the FIVE types with your partners • # of products • # of reactants • Elements vs. compounds • Similar reactants and products • On one separate sheet of paper with all of your group members names on it, write down the equations in your five groups
Classifying Reactions Copy down the following reactions on a SEPARATE sheet of paper and then classify the type of reaction and explain your answer. • C3H8 + O2 CO2 + H2O • FeCl3 + NaOH Fe(OH)3 + NaCl • Ag2O Ag + O2 • K + MgBr2 KBr + Mg • H2 + O2 H2O • NaCl + F2 NaF + Cl2
