How does that make you feel? Write down words that express these feelings on one of the opposite posters.
What qualities do you look for in a person that has nothing to do with their appearance?
Feelings of comparison, guilt, anger, sadness…can lead to disordered eating. Disordered eating is when a person is not listening to their own body but is listening to other people. Disordered eating can lead to extreme eating behaviors that can be deadly.
Disordered eating includes: Anorexia = self-starvation; eating very little or nothing at all Health problems include: damage to the heart, kidneys, and liver; osteoporosis; weakened muscles; DEATH Bulimia = binging (eating large amounts of food) and purging (vomiting after eating) Health problems include: tooth decay; damage to esophagus, stomach, intestines; DEATH Emotional eating which can lead to obesity. = Eating to “comfort” feelings of hurt, shame, guilt. Health problems include: damage to bones/joints; damage to heart; DEATH
All disordered eating behaviors can result in malnutrition. Malnutrition is when the body does not get enough nutrients to function.
So what is healthy eating? • Healthy eating means listening to your body (intuitive eating). Your body knows how to use the food you eat. Your body will tell you when its hungry, when its full, what foods it wants or needs. • A healthy eater: • eats all foods • enjoys food for what it is (fuel for the body) • does not use food to express emotions
The media (TV, magazines, movies, celebrities, news) and our country tells us that our appearance shows if we are healthy. FALSE. Every person is unique. Every person has a different body type.
We are each a unique combination of these body types. Be proud and confident in the unique type that you are. A person with healthy body image has confidence in themselves and has a personality. Remember, celebrities are paid to “sell their body”, their entire life is based on their appearance.
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
Think about this… What if the only reason people knew you was because you were “beautiful, hot, fine, handsome, studly…” Answer these questions in your journal: 1. What would your friendships with other people be based on? (Why would people be friends with you?) 2. Do you think those friendships would last? 3. What would happen if you were to have an accident and your appearance/body was changed? Would people still be your friend?
