CITIZEN JOURNALISM Can citizen journalists be considered ‘journalists’? – justify your response through the use of clear example BY BENON HERBERT OLUKA & ELIZABETH MAPHARI
Introduction to Citizen Journalism • Citizen journalism (CJ) is also known as "public", "participatory", "democratic", "guerrilla" or "street" journalism. • It is based on public citizens "playing an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analysing, and disseminating news and information. • Enables people without professional journalism training to use new media tools to produce and distribute information on their own.
History of Citizen Journalism • 1963: The assassination of US President John F. Kennedy, filmed by a citizen journalist. • 1999: Indian army Capt. SaurabhKalia, whose brother took to CJ to seek justice for him. • September 11, 2001 attack on Wold Trade Centre: “We the Media” by Dan Gillmor. First mass public usage of CJ.
Citizen Journalism takes root • In the last decade, citizen journalists has gone mainstream and brought to the fore lots of important stories. • New social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Storify, etc, and new technologies like smart phones, Ipads, and hidden cameras, have led to rise of CJ.
Are Citizen Journalists “journalists”? • CJ has changed the face of journalism through user-generated content and immediacy. • Recognition of role of CJ: Mainstream media has embraced CJ (Al Jazeera, CNN, M&G) • However, CJ does not have core guiding principles that anchor mainstream media • So CJ comes of as biased, ethical deficient, and lacking in credibility.
Citizen Journalism as Journalism • When done correctly, CJ can be a powerful media tool • Making CJ credible: Basic quality-control mechanisms need to be developed and maintained, e.g. - Code of Ethics - Fact-checking - Full disclosure
Citizen or Digital Journalist? • Crowd-sourced journalism, also currently called Citizen Journalism, is here to stay. But should it be called citizen journalism? • “Citizen journalist is a misnomer. There is no such thing. There are citizens and there are journalists. Everybody can be one of the former, but to be called a journalist means that you are a professional. Either you have been schooled in journalism, or you have "paid your dues," rising slowly through the ranks. Those who write or photograph for the sheer joy of doing so are amateurs. It comes from the Latin, "those who love to do." However, they are not professionals.”
