  2. Plans for today… • Spring, Summer, and Fall • Sharing from Linda, Rebecca & Laurel • Summer plans and outcomes • Advice to our former selves • Spring Reflection • Summer accountability • Fall plans • A suggestion: Take notes today. Ideas, prompts, etc. that you can use in your reflection.

  3. 21-CTI Summer Work • A.k.a. “should city” • Resources: • Jeff • 21-CTI colleagues (coffee accountability) • Food for thought: • Presentations? Articles? • Sharing your materials (internal and external)

  4. WarmUp: Summer Best “All my questions for the JiTT will be created and placed into the software.” “To have all my JITT questions posted in Jittdl.org” “Piloting several jitt weeks in my summer classes for students with questions to also use in fall.” “I will prepare JITT for two of my lecture classes this fall term.”

  5. WarmUp: Summer Best “I would have modules of flipped classroom learning materials (videos) to supplement the textbook. My current "to do" list includes 15 short videos. I would have JiTT questions to go with each day of class discussion. I could then use the "extra" class time to have the students work in small groups to solve problems using the information. All this would be sitting on my desk, ready to roll, before the semester started.”

  6. WarmUp: Summer Minimum What is the minimum acceptable outcome of your work this summer? “I will not be teaching this summer but plan to make certain that I am ready for JITT in the fall.” “I have the first third of the class into JiTT.” “At least half my JiTT questions would be set up and ready to go. (but even thinking about only having them half done freaks me out)”

  7. WarmUp: Summer Minimum “Finish warm up questions and include the questions into either JITT or Blackboard Learn. Implementation will be ready to go for Fall Semester 2014. The requirement will be written into the course syllabus. I should have thirty questions worth two points each. ”

  8. Other comments: “I am not sold on the JITT platform. It would be more convenient for me and my students to use BBL. The HTML feature of using the JITT platform seems cumbersome and more trouble than it might be worth. especially in trying to learn BBL adding yet another platform to learn seems to be inefficient. The jury is still out on what I will use.”

  9. Warm Up: Advice to BLI Participants One of the outcomes of your work on the 21st-Century Teaching Initiative is to write a Spring Reflection about your experiences in the 21-CTI (so far). The following question should help with that reflection and be useful in other ways as well. If you were to give advice to an instructor just starting the BLI, what would be your advice on how to make it a productive and worthwhile experience?

  10. Warm Up: Advice to BLI Participants If you were to give advice to an instructor just starting the BLI, what would be your advice on how to make it a productive and worthwhile experience? “Have a weekly to do list and keep track.” “I think one of the important things is to not decide you want to change everything at once (which, of course, I have done) and focus on one thing at at time.”

  11. Warm Up: Advice to BLI Participants “It's very easy to get excited about the different teaching strategies and want to use them quickly and across all courses but utilize the "prep" semester as your time to do your due diligence and make it an effective new strategy. I believe that doing it wrong will only make it fail.”

  12. Spring Reflection Exercise Prompts: Feelings about the technique you chose Thoughts on the structure of the initiative How your course will change Structure of the "sales pitch" in your course Your feelings about the fall Your plans for collegial support Pick 3 of these and write a summary-like sentence for each. Then we will share.

  13. Summer Accountability • Most popular suggestions • Email nudges • Reviewing questions/plans remotely • In-person meetings • In the post-workshop survey I will offer some choices and you can “opt-in” for whichever you like. • Send me an email with any specific needs.

  14. Visiting In The Fall List of available classes will go out Jeff’s: Conceptual Physics – MW 8 AM, NC 1525 Physics of Sound & Music – T/R 2 PM, NC 1525 General Physics I – T/R 10 AM, NC 1608

  15. Spring Reflection • Dual-purpose: • Encourage critical reflection by participants • Formative assessment of the initiative • Rough goal: 1-2 pages, adjust as needed • To me by the end of finals (5/16). Email is fine. • I still hope that this initiative can happen again next year, but right now it doesn’t look good.

  16. Outcomes & Deliverables • Spring Reflection, Friday May 16th. • Look for these: • Fall Reflection (at the end of fall term) • Survey to students (could be customized) • Package your materials for use by others • Think about these: • Presentation at teaching conference? • Article for discipline teaching journal?
