Welcome toCitySHapeRS During the next few lessons we will be exploring… • What urban, suburban and rural mean • Cities of New Zealand • Why cities change Image: http://www.123rf.com/photo_7630380_cartoon-city-skyline.html
Lets start by exploring what urban, suburban and rural mean… Image: http://www.bricoleurbanism.org/whimsicality/urban-fabric-form-comparison/
The word urban means to be living in, or from, the city To be in the city means you are surrounded by lots of buildings, lots of cars and lots of people What is the name of this city? Here is a clue… The Sky Tower can only be found in Auckland city. Image: http://www.peter-thomson.co.uk/new_zealand/auckland.html
Suburban areas are part of the urban area but are slightly different Suburban areas are found on the outside of the inner city and are filled mostly with houses They have schools, parks, libraries and local shops, which is why many people choose to live here What is the name of the suburban area your school is in? The word rural means to be in or from the countryside To be in the countryside means you are far away from the city This photo was taken in Whitianga, East of the North Island of New Zealand Later we will see how far Whitianga is from Auckland city Image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pkajithkumar/4788646793/
urban suburban rural What kinds of different things can we see between urban, suburban and rural? Discuss as a class and see what differences you can find… • there are many tall concrete buildings • there are many houses • there are many green hills • there are many cars • there are few cars • we can see no cars • many people work here • many of people live here • few people work or live here
By looking at the land from above, we can also see how urban changes into suburban and then in to rural…
Lets try and find where the urban and suburban areas are in this next image…
urban Remember in the urban image we saw large tall buildings… And in the suburban image we saw smaller buildings such as houses… suburb Where could the urban area be in this image? Where could the suburban area be in this image? This pink line tells us where the urban area stops and where the suburban area begins. Image: http://maps.google.co.nz/maps
Let’s try another image, but this time we are going to try and find where the suburban and rural areas are…
In the suburban image we saw smaller buildings such as houses… … And in the rural image we saw green hills… Where could the suburban area be in this image? rural suburb Where could the rural area be in this image? Where would the pink line go to tell us where the suburban area stops and where the rural area begins? Image: http://maps.google.co.nz/maps
suburb rural Where are the suburban and rural areas in this image? Where do they meet? Image: http://maps.google.co.nz/maps
suburb rural Where are the suburban and rural areas in this image? Where do they meet? Image: http://maps.google.co.nz/maps
Now that we know what urban, suburban and rural areas are and look like… Let’s recap on what we have learnt so far…
So what have we learnt so far? Urban areas… • Have lots of tall buildings and cars and many people work here • Are far away from the countryside or rural area • The name of our city is… Auckland
So what have we learnt so far? Suburban areas… • Have many houses, cars and many people live here • Are part of the urban area but are slightly different because they are on the outside of the inner city suburban urban • The name of our suburb is… ???
So what have we learnt so far? Rural areas… Whitianga • Have many green hills, few cars and very few people live or work here Auckland • Are far away from the urban area or inner city • We saw one image of a rural area and that place was called… Whitianga, which is on the East side of the North island Image: http://keithmelchiors.com/nzmaps.aspx
In the next lesson we will explore “Cities in New Zealand”. End of lesson
