Sin is an actual offense against God and in addition other people including yourself.
"The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.” Galatians 5:19-21
"Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires." Galatians 5:24
The key response to sin is to acknowledge it and respond to Jesus in faith.
Guilty feelings arise from violations of one's internal values.
1. Real guilt when you sin and objectively go against God2. A lack of necessary guilt when you are objectively wrong, but don't feel inner conviction3. False guilt when you feel guilt, but haven't done anything wrong
The key to false guilt? There is no remedy for false guilt because it is false. You need to throw it away.
"Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.”Hebrews 10:24
"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.”Romans 12:2
The key to shame is to expose it to the light because it loses its power.
"So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself.
My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God." 1 Corinthians 4:1-5
