A little about BioMed Central… • BioMed Central is an STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) database. All articles are reviewed before publishing. • It offers full texts, citations, and abstracts. There are also no use restrictions on the website.
Locating BioMed Central • First, access the Dean B. Ellis Library website at library.astate.edu • Find the Article Databases link and click. This will take you to all the databases available.
Almost there…. • Scroll down to the Alphabetical List of Databases section and click on the ‘B’ link. This will take you to the ‘B’ databases where BioMed is located
Journals Found in BioMed Various journals are found on BioMed. In fact, over 196 journals are in its portfolio. Some of the main ones include: • Journal of Biology • BMC Bioinformatics • Malaria Journal • Genome Biology BMC, Independent Journals, and other journals also available
Navigating the Website • Basic Search (or Quick Search)
Refining your search… You can refine your basic search and sort it by date, abstract, and other options.
Advanced Search • The Advanced Search option is located on the homepage near the top of the page
The Advanced Search allows you to look for a specific title, author, and you can even search for certain journals and eliminate others
The Advanced Search also has a option that shows all the items you have searched for while visiting the site in case you would like to revisit an old link You can store these searches or even combine them with others
Example Abstract – gives a brief overview of the article Full text – can only read full article if registered member; allows you to view entire article on the website PDF – a photocopy of the original document “Free” icon – available free to online, registered users “Open Access” icon – available permanently and immediately online; users allowed to cite this article if it is properly cited
What to do with your article… Once you have found your article, you can save it in your search results to print later, print the article immediately, save the link for future reference, or email the link to yourself to print or review at a later time.
What is a wild card?-a wild card is a character that substitutes for a letter • The wild card for BioMed Central is ‘+’ If searching “l+ng”, results will include lung, lang, and ling. • Adding an asterisk will result in more results. Searching “ask*” results in 9,235 results because it includes asks, asking, etc… Searching “ask” results in only 2,432 articles.
