Round table results (overview) OYAP Conference – Windsor Compiled by: Dr. Sylvie Albert, Robin Porter and Dan Lortie
Registration process • Issues: quantity vs. quality. Disappointing results, students register for level 1 and are not recognized as apprentices, forms and deadlines are different • Best practice: passionate front line educators explaining process to all interested parties. MTCU meet with coop and tech teachers • Solutions: clear explanations of programs for parents, students, employers. Tracking of communications. Constant and regular communication and updates. College recognition of level 1. Ensure one common voice and system.
OYAP Definition • Issues: Too broad, tie-in to budgets leads people to adopt broadest definition • Best Practice: Success of definition linked to recognition of program – marketing activities should include identifying graduating students who are continuing in apprenticeship • Solution: Need concentrated vs. non-concentrated (experiential) definitions
Job Connect Partnership • Issues: practices vary among regions and eligibility guidelines are the most problematic • Best practice: OYAP includes JC staff in their communication network (inform them of registrations, build relationships for summer jobs, advertise self-help programs at JC, etc.) • Solution: share information with a view to promoting consistency
Partnerships with Colleges • Issues: some colleges do not recognize dual credit or other secondary school programs. Employers do not always support dual credits and feel students do not have enough experience upon graduation • Best practice: sharing of resources by multiple school boards. London sends students to Lambton College every Friday on level 1 modules. • Solution: articulation agreements with colleges so that high schools can deliver level 1 with college approval. Revisit dual credit process to give more weight to Level 1 in-school training.
Working with Employers in Unionized Settings • Issues: Ratios – if not in-line, students have to be let go. Concerns over replacing a regular employee. • Best practice: have alumni take on more students and share success stories. Work with Job Connect. Invite unions to round table discussions with OYAP. Ask employers to discuss their reality. • Solutions: OYAP needs to position itself to work with and lobby the new College of Trades. Communicate that OYAP is exempt and the need for future generations to be ready. Prepare a Q&A.
Communication, Marketing, Promotions • Issues: lack of access to parents. Improve image to be considered a viable alternative next to colleges and universities. Unions, ratios, saturation • Best practice: Peel region diversity of images. Renfrew use alumni in presentations. Barrie sends mail-outs to parents. London provides booklet and Peel a virtual guidance office. Tax credits. • Solutions: Diversity in marketing, educate teachers and parents, start an Apprenticeship Fair. Funding for small businesses. Use alumni in marketing activities.
Advisory Committee • Issues: Employers need to know what they will get out of it. Distance and overuse of same resources. • Best practice: Sector-specific advisory committees • Solution: Target specific employer groups to deal with industry-specific problems
SHSM, OSP, OYAP • Issues: Need clarification of dual credit (ex: accelerated coop does not satisfy current criteria). SHSM process needs clarification of appropriate certifications. EDU/TCU have to work together to provide clarifications. • Solution: One strong voice – highly political. Develop a common Q&A, tip sheet, and checklist. Use Ontario Skills Passport in career exploration curriculum.
