Warm Up December 5, 2012 • Three students were discussing their ideas about chemical bonds. This is what they said: • Carlos: “I think a chemical bond is produced by a molecule. It a substance made up of matter that holds atoms together.” • Will: “I think a chemical bond is an attraction between atoms. It is not made up of matter.” • Josh: “I think a chemical bond is a structural part of an atom that connects it to other atoms.” • Who do you most agree with and why?
Agenda • Warm Up • Correct Homework • Chemical Bonding Notes • Chemical Bonding Investigation Lab • Cool Down • HW: • Read 5.1 • p. 182 #1a-c, 2a-c • 5.1 Vocabulary Foldable (3 words on p. 176)
Chemical Compounds • Compounds are made of more than one element held together by chemical bonds. • The chemical formula tells you what elements are present and in what amount. The subscript tells you how many atoms of that element are present in the compound
Chemical Bonds • Covalent Bonds: • Form between two non-metals • Valence Electrons are shared • Examples: O2, CO2, H2O, CH4, C6H12O6
Ionic Bonds: • Form between metals and non-metals • Valence Electrons are taken • Examples: MgO, LiCl, Fe2O3,NaCl, BeCl2
Cool Down • Title: Covalent and Ionic Bonds Double Bubble Map
