  1. Warm Up December 3, 2012 DIRECTIONS: For each of the following, decide whether you think the statement is true or false. Then explain why. • Radiation can both cause and treat cancer. • Radioactivity did not exist before humans discovered it and started building nuclear weapons. • Once a material is radioactive, it will be radioactive forever. • Radiation has more to do with the electrons of an atom than with the nucleus. • Humans have a clear plan for how to safely dispose of radioactive waste.

  2. Answers • True. Radiation can tamper with the DNA in cells, making them abnormal. But, since radiation kills cells, it can also be used to target damaged cancerous cells. • False. Radioactivity has been around since the Big Bang. • False. The thing about radioactive decay is that eventually the radioactive substance breaks down into other non-radioactive substances. However, this process can take thousands of years. • False. Radioactivity ONLY has to do with the nucleus. An unstable nucleus means a radioactive atom. • False. We have some possibilities but no definite, safe way to dispose of nuclear waste (as you will see in the video).

  3. Agenda • Warm Up • Periodic Table Quiz • Radioactivity Investigation Lab • “Eyes of Nye: Nuclear Waste” Video • Cool Down • HW: • Read 4.5 • p. 163 #1a-c, #2a-c, #3a-b • 4.5 Vocabulary Foldable (6 words on p. 158) This is the international symbol for radioactivity.

  4. Cool Down • Title: Radioactivity Circle Map In the square, write the things that affect your understanding of radioactivity In the large circle, write what you know about radioactivity Radioactivity
