GRAIN GRADING LANGUAGE OF QUALITY
GRADING IS THE PROCESS OF DIVIDING A COMMODITY INTO CLASSES, EACH OF WHICH HAS A DISTINCTIVE ACCEPTABILITY TO A SIGNIFICANT GROUP OF BUYERS.
CRITERIA FOR GRADES AND STANDARDS • BUILT ON CHARACTERISTICS THE USERS CONSIDER IMPORTANT • BUILT ON THOSE FACTORS THAT CAN BE ACCURATELY AND UNIFORMLY MEASURED AND INTERPRETED • COST OF OPERATING THE SYSTEM MUST BE REASONABLE
CONTRIBUTIONS TO OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY • TIME SAVER FOR TRADERS • BUY AND SELL OF UNSEEN COMMODITIES • TIME SAVER FOR CONSUMERS • NO NEED TO INSPECT EACH LOAD • TIME SAVER FOR LENDERS • NO NEED TO INSPECT COLLATERAL • PERMITS MIXING OF SEPARATELY OWNED COMMODITIES IN STORAGE OR TRANSPORTATION
PRICING EFFICIENCY ALLOWS FOR COMMUNICATION
GRADING GRAIN: CHARACTERISTICS TEST WEIGHT BROKEN CORN & FOREIGN MATERIAL DAMAGED KERNELS
TEST WEIGHT IS A MEASURE OF GRAIN DENSITY AND IS DETERMINED BY WEIGHING THE QUANTITY OF GRAIN REQUIRED TO FILL A WINCHESTER BUSHEL (VOLUME MEASUREMENT)
BROKEN CORN AND FOREIGN MATERIAL PIECES OF KERNELS OF CORN AND ALL MATTER OTHER THAN CORN THAT WILL PASS THROUGH A 12/64 -INCH SIEVE
TOTAL DAMAGED KERNELS IS DEFINED AS KERNELS AND PIECES OF KERNELS THAT ARE HEAT DAMAGED, SPROUTED, FROSTED, WEATHER DAMAGED, MOLDY OR DISEASED
1. BCFM: CLASSIFYING PIECES OF GRAIN, DIRT WEED SEEDS AS HAVING THE SAME VALUE.
2. LOWEST FACTOR APPROACH : PLACES GRAIN IN THE SAME GRADE THAT COULD LIKELY HAVE WIDE DIFFERENCE IN OVERALL QUALITY.
3: THE PRESENT SET OF GRADES EXCLUDES FACTORS THAT ARE ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT.
GRAIN GRADES AND TRANSPORTATION ISSUES INCREASE IN BCFM DURING TRANSIT.
