Bananas in Guatemala1870-1930 Ashley, Aubry, Natalie, Julia W.
Guatemala • More than 50% of economy was dependent on growth and exportation of bananas. • Owned by United Fruit Company (1900) • American run company • Relationship: neo-colonialist (but run by Fruit Company)
Production and Workforce • Natives – poor and needed jobs • Panama disease • Fruit company 42% of land • No labor movements or unions were allowed
Where Did the Bananas Go? • Mainly exported to developed countries like US and Europe (considered delicacy in 1800s) • In the U.S from 1870-1900, the number of bunches of bananas imported grew from 0 – 16 billion bunches. • UFCO made transportation and communication easy with fancy boats and trading with other countries.
Peak Years • Peaked in 1870-1910 • Panama disease wiped out bananas in Central America starting in 1920’s, Great Depression 1930’s also worsened the problem. • Made a comeback • Dole continues today in Guatemala, still very successful!
Effects on Local Economy/Price Changes • Individual landowners became richer but the villages suffered because of the plantations • Country wanted to modernize, wanted the fruit company to help it. • More railroads, buildings, communications etc • Manuel Estrada Cabrera – leader of country who instigated changes with UFCO
Main Ideas • “Banana Republic” came to be the name of these neo-colonialist countries similar to Guatemala –completely dependent on one resource (in case of Guatemala, bananas) • Bananas are a huge part of the economy, and Companies that monopolize the area like UFCO can also help nations’ infrastructure like communications, transportations, etc. • Obstacles like Panama disease and Great Depression are dangerous to economies so dependent on one export item.
