Plantations • Bananas are grown on plantations in tropical areas • The working class was made up of natives and mestizos
Exportation • United States • Boston • Southeast US • Bananas were popular because they were cheaper than local fruits like apples
Peak Years • 1930 UFCO absorbed more than 20 rival firms • Capital of $215,000,000 • Became largest employer in Central America
PRICES • Started high – at $2 per banana! • Went lower as they could be produced in bulk • Still profited since plantation workers were paid really low wages
