1. Proportion – the size relationships within an object or design.
General Rules of Proportions: • Rectangles are generally more pleasing than squares. • Unequal divisions of space are more appealing than equal divisions. • Proportions are expressed as ratios.
The Golden Rectangle/Section • Has sides in a ratio of 2:3 • The short sides are 2/3 the length of the long sides • Most people study the shapes and sizes of objects and can tell by look if something “fits”.
An easy way to approximate a golden section/rectangle is by using this pattern of numbers: 1,2,3,5,8,13,21 A rectangle with dimensions based on two consecutive numbers in this sequence (ex. 3:5) will be close to the shape of a golden section/rectangle.
