The MYP Personal Project is • the culminating experience of all students in the MYP • a long – term investigation on a topic or personal passion of student choice • designed to strengthen and extend a student’s personal and interpersonal learning • the opportunity to demonstrate how students have internalized the I.B. learner profile attributes, the approaches to learning, and the global contexts
The Requirements of the personal project • Select a topic of student interest that focuses on the global contexts of the Middle Years Programme. • Create an inquiry question to research and that will result in a product or outcome. • Record the process of research and findings via a process journal. • Complete a final written report. • Exhibit project and product/outcome for the school community. • Graded with Personal Project criteria.
The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year course of study which allows students to fulfill the requirements of an internationally recognized rigorous course of study. The IB Diploma Programme offers a broad and balanced curriculum in which students are encouraged to apply what they learn in the classroom to real world issues and problems. Theory of Knowledge—designed to explore questions about different sources of knowledge (perception, language, emotion, reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical, historical) This course is taken both junior and senior years. Creativity, Activity, and Service—participation in artistic activities (creativity), sports, expeditions, or local/international projects (activity), and community or social service projects (CAS—A sustaining and continuous project over two years is required). Many universities grant sophomore status for students with IB Diplomas. Many universities guarantee admission for students with IB Diplomas. All nine campuses of the University of California now award 30 hours of credit to any IB student who earns an IB diploma with a score of 30 points or higher. The IB Diploma Programme is criterion-based; each student’s performance is measured against well-defined levels of achievement. Grades reflect attainment of knowledge and skills relative to set standards that are applied equally to all IB schools. Diploma candidates select one subject from each of the six subject groups. Frequently Asked Questions • Q. Can you be in an academy and take IB? A. Yes, a student can be in an academy and complete the requirements the IB Diploma Programme; however, modifications need to be made in the academy requirements. • Q. Do you have to take all of the IB classes? A. No. There is plenty of room in student schedules to allow them to take electives. However, the Diploma Programme is a big commitment. Also, students have the option to take single IB classes much as they would an honors class.
Frequently Asked Questions • Q.What will happen to GPA’s with the IB Programme vs. AP? A. In junior and senior, students who pass an IB class with a C or better will receive the extra grade point that they would earn in an honors or AP class if they earned a C or better. • Q. Can you take band and be in IB? A. Yes, though it will fill your schedule.
How Do I Enroll? All students in the Elk Grove Unified School District are eligible to enroll. Open Enrollment and Interdistrict transfers will be accepted. Open Enrollment has begun and closes February 3rd at 5:30 p.m.. For Intradistrict or Interdistrict transfers, contact counselors Deana Seyvertsen or Ashley Koren to make enrollment arrangements. Complete the IB Interest form and send to Deana Seyvertsen or Ashley Koren. Harriet Eddy students will complete the Pre-IB Diploma course selection form when they sign up for classes. Enrollment into the Diploma Programme will begin at the end of sophomore year. Preference will be given to students enrolled at Laguna Creek. International Baccalaureate How to Apply
Enrollment recommendations The ideal IB student combines intellectual potential with motivation and a love of learning. It is recommended that incoming ninth-grade students meet the following standards: • 3.0 or better GPA in grades 7-8. • High motivation as demonstrated by excellent attendance and exemplary conduct.
