Future City Competition • Started with Hammurabi and the TRS-80 • For middle school students ages 11-14 • 30,000 in 1,111 schools in 40 U.S. regions • 2008: 16th Year - Confront urban disasters • Keep infrastructure safe and healthy with nanotechnology monitoring • Volunteer judges; competitions in January • Using SimCity3000 donated video game

  4. IEEE-USA Sponsorship • Future City essay competition (second year) • Nanotechnology monitoring • City structures & systems • Best city communications award (8th year)

  5. EWeek at High Schools • National Engineering Design Challenge (NEDC) • Technology designs to help people with disabilities in workplaces • Builds skills: math, science, research, writing, presentation, and drafting/design • Competition in DC on 15-16 February • Sponsor: Junior Engineering Technical Society • www.jets.org/programs/nedc

Online Video Competition • “How Engineers Make a World of Difference” • Designed by graduate engineering students • Undergrads develop YouTube videos making engineering “cool” and accessible to 11 to 13 year-olds • Seven scholarship prizes, $10K, at Eweek • www.ieeeusa.org/communications/video_competition/

  19. Design Squad • Starting second season of 13 30-minute episodes • IEEE-USA funding $50K • WGBH production, PBS distribution • Top 50 markets • Locally Brevard BCC digital TV68

Design Squad Design • Host Nate Ball, a 20-something professional engineer • Targeted to Grades 4 and up • Team of eight high school students complete project • Top student wins $10K Intel scholarship • First season programs available at http://pressroom.pbs.org/programs/design_squad/archives

First Season Results • Over 550,000 viewers each week • Hosted 120 events, trainings and workshops • Reached >49,000 students, parents, teachers, engineers • Watching four episodes: • Improved students’ understanding of Engineering Design Process (brainstorm, design, build, test) • Increased interest in after-school activities
