A little about me Spanish is my native language. Born in Texas. Raised in Mazatlan, Mexico until I was 6. Visited there every summer growing up. As a Latina, Spanish is near and dear to my heart. I practice my traditions, listen to Latin music, and speak Spanish daily. I love to travel to Spanish-speaking countries and do so as often as I can.

UnaPromesa a MisEstudiantes“A Promise to My Students” I promise to care about you. To help you when you are struggling. To be fair and consistent. To make learning interesting and meaningful. To enjoy teaching you. To be patient with you. To get to know you and believe in you. ...and be trustworthy. I promise that I will challenge you to be your very best and do everything I can to help you succeed. And I promise that, no matter what, I will never give up on you.
Growing Pains • Period of Transition • Learning Curve (adjustment period) for both the students and I • Responsibilities at school have grown in their homeroom and adding a new, additional, academic course can be a bit overwhelming. • Organization (Binder) – logistics (Where does it go? What is it for?) • Homework Outside of their regular class
Program Development • Teacher Crafted - Individualized Curriculum • Considers: Grade-level, Learning Styles, Fluency in their Native Language • Created to Develop students’ reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in Spanish. • Teaching Methods: Structured and Non-Structured • Daily ORAL Practice, Songs, Stories, Culture, Reading/Writing, Art, and Technology.
MY Vision To design a program that addresses the specific readiness skills to begin studying a language, the foundational skills to continue language development, and the essential skills to master necessary competencies, giving students a well-rounded foundation and appreciation of the language for further study. A curriculum based on the National Foreign Language Standards which incorporate the five C’s: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Use our curriculum to gain entry to and open our own chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society, “SociedadHispanica de Amistad.”

How to get an “A” and be a “Star” in “Español”. BE PREPARED! ALWAYScome to class prepared. We will ALWAYS need the binder, all class handouts, and a pencil. Don’t Forget Homework: Due to the high number of students taking Spanish. I cannot allow make ups. STUDY VOCABULARY This will count as EXTRA CREDIT. ***Write the words three times each (may increase to five later in the year) Draw pictures and label them Make Flashcards Quiz a Friend
How to get an “A” and be a “Star” in “Español”. DO HOMEWORK ALWAYSdo homework and turn it in on time! NO LATE assignmentsaccepted, extensions are rare. ALL HW is Review of what was learned in class. MOST assignments should take no more than 5-10 minutes. Necessary to make up lost time between classes. (4th- Due Friday, 5th- Due Thursday) PARTICIPATE Participation on class is necessary Say and Repeat after the teacher IF you say it! YOU learn it!
Extra Credit Students are given Vocabulary sheets throughout the week. They can choose whichever they feel they need more practice on but they must complete the whole sheet. The purpose of this exercise is to help them with spelling, pronunciation, and daily practice. Also, writing it out that many times will help them retain the information.
Extra Credit Continued… On a separate sheet of paper, have them write the words (in Spanish only) as they are pronouncing them out loud. They get half a point for each time they complete this exercise. If they complete this exercise each day of the week, they would've had it written out four times for a total of 2 points. I'm open to ideas on extra credit if they want to get creative. Projects, reports, skits, scripts, etc.
TWO Most Important Resources • The BINDER with ALL the handouts. • Teacher’s Website: www.woodside.k12.ca.us/domain/140 The purpose of this Website is as reference for misplaced items, absences, or more practice. (Students receive an initial paper copy of EVERYTHING.) • You will ALSO find: Weekly Announcements (Posted Every Friday under “EstaSemana” or “This Week) • Calendar of school events • Info. on my Master’s Thesis
Binder • We DO NOT use a textbook in this class • Includes documents that they canaddinformation on to in order to make for a more personalized/genuine experience. • The Binder is intended to become LIKE a very important book. • Tabscontainlabeled content: Vocabulary, Notes, Homework, More Practice • Mimic the Website • This Binder will go with them through the grades.
