UN FAST FACTS The United Nations (UN)is an international organization responsible for making it easier for countries to enforce international law, provide security, encourage economic development and social progress, and promote human rights . The UN grew out of the League of Nations, a part of The Treaty of Versailles that ended WWI. The UN was founded in 1945 when the Charter of the United Nations was drafted

Five (5) Branches of the UN 1. UN General Assembly: *main decision-making and representative assembly *responsible for upholding the principles of the UN *composed of all member states *headed by a president elected from the member states

The UN Security Council: the most powerful of all the branches has power to authorize the deployment UN member states' militaries can mandate a cease-fire during conflicts can enforce penalties on countries if they do not comply with given mandates composed of five permanent members and ten rotating members Five permanent members: U.S., U.K., France, Russia, China Permanent members are considered global “superpowers” A superpower is a state that achieves generally unopposed dominance and can exert international influence at will.

The Economic and Social Council *assists the General Assembly in promoting economic and social development as well as cooperation of member states 5. The Secretariat *headed by the Secretary General, currently Ban Ki Moon of South Korea * provides studies, informationand data when needed by other UN branches
UNITED NATIONS • Providing Peace and Security to Member Nations and Beyond! • In order to join the UN a country MUST accept both peace and all obligations outlined in the UN Charter and be willing to carry out any action to satisfy those obligations • Members must abide by the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is the basis for the UN’s existence.
G-8 and G-20 • The G8 is a grouping of eight of the most industrialized nations in the world, that acts as a forum for cooperation. It is made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the US and the UK. It also includes the European Commission and Council Presidents • The G-20 is constructed along similar lines, and all G8 nations are also in the G20. They are joined by South Africa, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, China, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Australia • Both groups were created to increase the discussions and relationships between nations in the areas of international finance and economics. • Both groups encourage economic growth and prosperity for member and non-member nations
