  2. Nazis Defeated • March 1945 • US and Russian meet at Elbe River • They agree not to fight • Mussolini captured… and executed

  3. Germany Falls • V.E Day after Germany surrenders • Hitler’s “thousand-year Reich” ended • U.S.A produced much more supplies

  4. The Struggle for the Pacific • Mid 1942 • Japanese controlled most of Southeast Asia • Controlled many of the Pacific Islands • May 1942 • Japanese gained the Philippines • Killed hundreds of U.S soldiers • 10,000 Filipino soldiers

  5. The people take back the Islands • Filipinos help captives escape • U.S take the offensive after battle of midway & the Coral Sea • U.S marine victory at Guadalcanal started a series of “island hoping”

  6. Defeat for Japan • Invasion or the BOMB?? • Japanese pilots became kamikaze pilots • 1945 Japan would not surrender • Scientists started to test atom splitting • German & Italian refugees research: Manhattan Project • Created atomic Bomb

Utter Devastation • Truman and other allied forces issued a warning to japan • Surrender or face “complete destruction” • Atomic Bomb dropped on Hiroshima • Soviets declare war on japan • Nagasaki is bombed the following day • Emperor Hirohito forced the government to surrender • Peace treaty signed by Japan and allies
