Risk & Business Solutions TAKING STOCK OF THE CLEAN DEVELOPMENT MECHANISM UNDESA – TERIworkshop on Climate Change and Sustainable Development 7 – 8 April, New DelhiPresentation by Chaitanya KaliaErnst & Young
Contents • In this presentation…… • Climate Change – the business perspective • Climate Change – a view of business community • CDM in India • CDM – the way forward • Contact details
Climate Change – the business perspective • World Economic Forum (2005) – Global Risk to Business Environment recognizes “Climate Change” as one of the TOP-10 risk. • …. can disrupt markets throughout the world with almost instantaneous precision. Such risks can be difficult to anticipate and respond to, even for the most seasoned business leaders. • …Seldom can global risks be addressed by a single business entity, industry or country…. • …. There is also a large discrepancy between the immediate time horizon employed by most business and political leaders and the long-term approach required to tackle risks on a global scale…. • …As a result, our capacity to address risk is jeopardized; a myopic tendency – or worse: denial – prevails.
Climate Change – a view of business community • What works best with the Business Community…Converting Risk into Opportunity • Example…TOYOTA-Hybrid Gas-electric vehicle, Brand value of environment friendly company • Keeping a long term … “Sustainable view” is always a challenge; …in doing so they can be punished by the markets. Which is threat to their existence. • Risk Management Strategies would require – Understanding the Risk, its impact and to some extent developing tolerance towards that • Considering the trans-boundary nature of Risks, Business would depend on Cross-cutting, International Intuitional Mechanism…and there are very few of them
CDM in India • Till the last count approx 240 projects approved by DNA, mostly private sector and public and Govt. is catching up fast • More than 100 of ET500 companies are developing projects under CDM • In last few months Every 3rd day there is an article on Climate Change/CDM • Global buyer’s (50 to 100) analyzing all these projects, asking questions to these “xyz” companies • Do you know Organizations with CSR (GRI/WBCSD) disclosure are “Hot Favorite” ? • The “me too” effect • High In-tangible value of a tangible commercial transaction
CDM …moving forward • Many more innovative projects of GHG reduction would come-up • Cross border transparent evaluation of projects • Wind fall profits? • To explore Sustainability and CDM links… • To look at CDM beyond numbers
