Objective • Students will be able to explain Napoleon’s rise to power, the outcome and the lingering effects on Europe
I. Napoleon Rises to Power • 20 year old lieutenant when the revolution broke out • Won a series of victories vs. the Hapsburgs and others • 1799 overthrew the Directory set up 3 man governing board known as the Consulate • Appointed himself consul for life
I. Napoleon Rises to Power cont. • In 1804 he names himself Emperor of the French • Napoleon held votes called plebiscites at each step in his rise to power • Napoleon still had absolute power • This is referred to as democratic despotism
II. Napoleon Reforms France • Economic Reforms • Controlled prices • Built roads and canals • Set up new industry • Political Reforms • Opened jobs to men of talent • Napoleonic Code- set of laws with enlightened principals • Social/ Religious • Made Peace with Catholic Church • Women lost many rights
III. Napoleon Builds an Empire • 1804-1812 Napoleon marches across Europe with army conquering • Annexed (took) Netherlands, Belgium, parts of Italy and Germany • Waged economic warfare vs. Britain called the Continental System.
Nationalism worked against Napoleon • Conquered nations saw him as a foreign oppressor • Spanish waged guerilla warfare aka hit and run raids vs. Napoleon • Napoleon tries to conquer Russia as well • Russians battled back with scorched-earth policy • Burned crops and villages as French advanced, left the French cold and hungry • Russian winter defeated Napoleon more than any battle IV. Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Nations at Leipzig Napoleon abdicated the following year in 1814 He came back in triumph in 1815 but was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo V. Napoleon Falls From Power
VI. Congress of Vienna • Leaders of Europe sat down after Napoleon and decided to put the conquered countries back the way they were and put kings back on the throne • Goal was to create balance of power to ensure peace • Concert of Europe- system where the European powers meet occasionally to discuss problems
