Pursuing Happiness: A history since May 2001, founded in Hong Kong by NGO funded through the Kadoorie Foundation. The motto "Help people to help themselves." Vision: Harmonious communities with nature. Mission: Reconnect hearts with nature and promote sustainable living. Programs focus on local economy, ecological agriculture, holistic health, and nature education. Case studies highlight successful initiatives in Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Wenchuan Earthquake rehabilitation. Explore ways to live sustainably and reconnect with nature.

  2. History in a Glance • - May 2001established in Hong Kong, NGO • Funded by the Kadoorie Foundation (via a stream of funds allocated by the Hon. Mrs McAulay) • The Foundation is founded in 1970 by the late Sir Horace Kadoorie • Foundation’s motto: “Help people to help themselves”.

  3. Our Vision Communities in which people live in harmony with each other and with nature. Our Mission PCD works with communities to re-connect people’s heartswith nature and to explore ways to live sustainably.

  10. …Respect for Nature Guangxi Case Study Nature Education Seed Cultivator Scheme • Facilitators, i.e.ToT • 1 year intensive training, heart-based approach e.g. Flow : arouse 5 senses • Tailor-made internship programme • Work in communities, teachers to spread nature education concept • Feedbacks: • more emotionally connected with nature • adopting appreciative attitude towards life

  12. … Ecological Agriculture Guizhou (Liping) Case Study The Ecological Agriculture of Fish Farming in Paddy fields in • Liufang village • ancient farming methods of Baiyue • 2005, organic rice farming:12 households; 2006, all 538 mu • 2006, established the Liufang Organic Agriculture Association • eliminated all use of hazardous chemicals • 2009, rice produced certified as organic product

  14. … Local Economy Yunnan Case Study Local Clothing Production • Self-reliance discussion with women villagers in 2 communities in Xishuangbanna prefecture • 3 purposes: • reducing expenditure • strengthening cultural identity • enhancing mutual help among women • 25 women villagers started preparing cloth-weaving tools and machines

  18. …Learning about Sustainable Living Community Supported Agriculture Internship Programme • encourage young people to explore and promote CSA between city and village • Learning CSA models in different countries, develop local CSA • 5 years, over 50 interns have been trained • 70% interns stay in networks and develop local CSA e.g. farmers’ market, Community Kitchens

  20. …Earthquake Rehabilitation Reborn on 12th May "Gradually I felt I was living again“ —Xie Farong from Mianzhu, Sichuan • Aug 2008, our partner, Handicap International (HI), provided rehabilitation & therapy • Continued til July 2009 Xie could raise her hand over her head, she could take care of herself • May 2010, HI help reconstructed Xie’s house
