  2. Prepositions Prepositional Phrases A prepositional phrase is a group of words that… • starts with a preposition • ends with an object (either a noun or pronoun)

Finding Objects of Prepositions Finding Objects of Prepositional Phrases • Find the preposition. • Ask Whom? or What? after it. • Whatever noun or pronoun answers the question is the OBJECT of the preposition (OP)! Example: I gave the cookie to the hungry boy at my lunch table. Prep. OP Prep. OP

  4. Prepositions Prepositional Phrases A prepositional phrase can have compound objects of prepositions (more than one). • Examples: • I went there with my sister and mom. • He gave a cookie tome and John.

  5. Prepositions Prepositional Phrases Determining if a prep. phrase is an ADJ or ADV: • Find the prep. phrase and underline it. • Look at its position in the sentence. If it is at the BEGINNING or can be MOVED, it is an ADV. • Look at the word IN FRONT OF IT and determine its part of speech. If the word is a/an… • Noun or pronoun – might be ADJ phrase • Verb, adj., or adv. – might be ADV phrase • See if the prep. phrase modifies that word. Does it tell… • How? When? Where? To what extent? Under what condition? ADV phrase • Which one? What kind? ADJ phrase • If the prep. phrase does NOT modify the word in front of it, check out the verb. If you can answer an adverb question about the verb, the prep. phrase is an ADV.
