~technological world~ • We currently live in a technological world • The majority of things that we do are done electronically • Nowadays a significant number of people communicate through social media. I wonder if it’s time to Fire Mike???
~social media~ • What is Social Media? • forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)
~examples of social media~ • Most Popular: • Facebook • MySpace • Twitter
~purpose of social media/networking~ • quickly share information about what’s happening in the world. • Purpose is to connect the world and make the world a smaller place • It allows information to travel quickly
~the exception: LinkedIn~ • Different type of social media • Purpose is to connect professionals • Facebook for Work • If employers want to search information on employees they should check out references and their LinkedIn account • Facebook, Twitter, and/or MySpace are for socializing
~graph~ 1.129 billion total social media accounts!!!
~why employers should not use social media to hire/fire employees~ • Invasion of privacy • No Freedom of Speech • No differentiation between PROFESSIONAL and PERSONAL lives • Does not always give a correct indication of what the employee is capable of • Individuals can differentiate between work and social life, but work wants to merge the two into one
~how employees are affected~ • Current Employees • Get fired due to recent posts that the employer finds inappropriate • Get fired for speaking their opinions, while they are not on the job
~how employees are affected~ • Prospective Employees • 45% of employers check Facebook before hiring • 35% get rejected because of what they have posted on their accounts
