1. Calling National and Secondary School Students! Have you ever wanted your artwork to be noticed on a national level? Are you interested in the natural environment around you? Then this competition is for you. To celebrate World Environmental Health Day, the EHAI are publishing a calendar that will feature artwork jointly from 5th and 6th class students in National Schools and transition year students in Secondary Schools in the Republic of Ireland. OUR THEME The Natural Environment – New Threats and Solutions We encourage each student to look at the positive individual actions that everyone can do to make a substantial change in our environment. 2. Remember, you have an influence over you environment that surrounds you and affects your health everyday. Here are just a few ideas to get you started. Species Extinction Each species has a valuable role in our planet. But it’s a careful balance and if one species dies it can have a terrible effect on the rest of our environment. For example in the case of bees, their dwindling population and the reduction in pollination can have serious consequences for people and animals and the environment. What can we do to combat this? Dead Zones in our Oceans Dead Zones in our Oceans are areas where low oxygen levels cause fish and other marine life to die. They are caused by very high levels of chemicals in the water. Why should be concerned about this and how do you think that these dead zones could be reversed? Population Growth Don’t we always say ‘the more the merrier’? The world population hit a huge seven billion people in 2011. And while we would like to welcome each new addition to our family, we want to make sure that the earth’s resources aren’t overwhelmed. The Environment and Health The damage done to our natural environment can impact directly on our health. Think of how the environment can lead to rises in obesity, diabetes, heart and lung disease, cancer, reproduction and mental health illnesses. What can you do to keep yourself healthy? Carbon Footprint Remember, we all have an effect on the environment in ways we don’t even think about just by going about our daily routine. Think of how you heat your home, how you get to school, and what you use to pack your lunch. How does this impact on your surroundings and what can you do to reduce it? Any medium, including paper, can be used as long as it is at least 30x40cm (A3) in total. In the case of photographic entries, digital files will be accepted. Resolution of all photographs should be 300dpi. File types accepted are TIFF and JPEG. Any art material can be used including paint, texts, coloured pencils, collage materials, photography, computer graphics. An official entry form must be securely attached to the back of each poster. Due to costs, entries will not be returned. However, entries will be stored until March 1st 2014, during which time arrangements may be made to retrieve them. In addition, the EHAI will not be held responsible for entries that are damaged or lost. Schedule of prizes one x €1000 for the school to be spent on a fun element which students will benefit from. Winning student will receive a €250 one4all voucher. If it is a joint project the voucher will be split among students.
