3. CTE Nov 5 2009 E-Forum Nassau BOCES 3 Priority: Student Centered Priority 1: Integration of Academic and Technical Content How do we apply these concepts to all students – that is what is significant in this document!
Will there be models to follow, sample curriculum for indiv. Districts to follow to build capacity and reduce redundancy, best practices
Will there be set aside or additional funding if we were to do one or more of these?
Will some of these be “required”? They are not now, we would like it to be….but would cost $ - what would be the implementation plan? How could re reach capacity?
Right now, much of CTE/CDOS is interpreted differently in schools, local requirements are different. Problem: NOT ASSESSED!
The document “screams” 21st century skills…..how do we do it?
Example: financial literacy….
Baldwin: Academies: Medical, Business, Financial Lit, Computers for the 21st C, “strand” for 4 years of HS/interdisciplinary w/academics – (last bullet)
There are many Career Academy models….Ford PAS being used
4. CTE Nov 5 2009 E-Forum Nassau BOCES 4 Priority: Priority: Student Centered Priority 1: Integration of Academic and Technical Content If hands on 21st learning, what kind of Regents exam? Would need hands on/real world testing
Bullet # 2, how do we do that? What is that? From whom would the models come?
Students must take 3 electives, one should be mandated to be CTE w/workforce readiness, 21st C skills, Financial Lit
Pathways for non-college bound…and even college bound!
Where are the priorities for Middle School and middle level education? CTE related programs, project based/problem solving learning
ELL’s: take a “sheltered English” approach: take CTE content and revise for ELL so they get the language and the content w/pictures and media
5. CTE Nov 5 2009 E-Forum Nassau BOCES 5 Priority: Priority: Student Centered Priority 1: Integration of Academic and Technical Content ELL’s: use the same instructional model for career prep, college prep, financial lit, etc.
Requirement for all students 1 credit in CTE? Unanimous agreement! But if it stands alone: what do we gain? Put it in context – integrated, real world, industry based better……
There needs to be definition of terms! Are we all talking about the same thing when we say CTE, CDOS, Career Academy, Career preparation, etc.
6. CTE Nov 5 2009 E-Forum Nassau BOCES 6 General Comments The survey feedback was specific, but document is general….what happened to that data?
College applications should have a box on them: “attended a CTE Center”
How will SED help with articulations? Mandate colleges build down just as HS are required to build up?
Require CFM of all students
