Building One Organisation Lucy Dennis Head of Development and Programmes Health Education East of England
Where does Education and Training sit in the reformed system?
Problem • The problem isthat staff are not engaged in the creation and development of ONE Local Education and Training Board (LETB) for the East of England.
Objective • The objective is to begin to build a single LETB culture and involve staff in the development of the organisation by April 2014.
Lost in Transition • The organisation • Primary focus on plan and priorities Vs. Organisational Development • Co location of three former Departments into one building. • Series of new policies and processes to adopt: Who is doing what? • The line manager • Deputy Directors felt unable to inform organisational design and emerging priorities. • Reported episodes of bullying and harassment in one specific department. • New breed of innovative, empowered managers joined new organisation - 'us and them'.
NHS Staff Pledges Engagement
How will we know we have succeeded? • Performance reviews, training budgets, coaching / mentoring etc • Connections between: • Role and organisational priorities • Role and improved patient outcomes • Role and line manager • Role and organisational values
June Staff Temp Check • 91% understand how roles support improvements in patient care • 67% feel valued & recognised for their work • 58% believe communication between senior staff and staff works well • 74% recommend the organisation as a place to work • 17% witnessed bullying or harassment in the last year • 58% have sufficient authority to make decisions • 15% feel there isn't a great atmosphere in the organisation • 18% feel line manager doesn't support their work-life balance
Lesson’s learnt • Get the basics right • Red thread of leadership • Elephant (s) in the room • Be brave!
